How does the TD2e acoustic imaging camera work?

The TD2e uses an array of 64 MEMS microphones to capture sound from multiple directions simultaneously. A beamforming algorithm focuses on sound sources from specific directions, filtering out environmental noise. The device then displays the sound source location as a colorful heatmap overlaid on the live camera image, allowing you to "see" where sounds are coming from — including ultrasonic sounds beyond human hearing.

What kind of leaks and faults can the TD2e detect?

The TD2e can detect:

  • Compressed air system leaks — including pneumatic valves, cylinders, and fittings
  • Gas leaks — pressurized gas escaping from pipelines
  • Vacuum system leaks — negative pressure leaks
  • Loose joint vibration — abnormal high-frequency sounds from loose components during operation

Its 2kHz to 100kHz frequency range covers both audible and ultrasonic signals produced by these faults.

What is the detection range of the TD2e?

The effective detection range is 0.3m to 60m.

Sounds closer than 0.3m may still be detected, but near-field effects can reduce positioning accuracy. Under certain conditions, sound sources with very high sound pressure levels may be detected beyond 60m.

Can the TD2e work in noisy industrial environments?

Yes. The TD2e is designed for industrial use. In noisy environments, use Noise Suppression Mode to filter out background noise and maintain stable acoustic imaging. You can also adjust the frequency range to focus on the target sound's frequency.

What's the difference between TD2e Standard and TD2e Kit?

The TD2e Kit includes everything in the Standard version, plus additional accessories for extended field use.The TD2e Kit includes everything in the Standard version, plus additional accessories for extended field use.

How long does the battery last?

≥3 hours of continuous operating time per battery. Actual operating time depends on environmental and usage conditions.

The TD2e Kit includes 2 batteries, allowing for full-day inspections with hot-swapping.

I usually don't leave reviews, but I have to on this product. Been looking for a good sound leak detector for HVAC industry and this tool work amazing. Finding the tiniest leak when it is a pressurized system or even when pulling a vacuum on a anything. Worth the $$$$ especially with the visual camera to pinpoint the leaks. Only thing I wish was the product came with a case so I can keep it from getting damage.

This acoustic imaging camera works very well. I have used it to find all the air leaks in a rather complex compressed air system with 3 compressors and distribution network.... I have found almost every leak, no matter how small. I have used it on car engines to locate idlers that are just starting to make noise that I cannot hear yet. I have tested it with refrigeration equipment and have been able to find extremely small leaks. If you do much trouble shooting, this machine has great value.

Great value for an acoustic imager that is made quite well
I never thought I would be able to see sound, but with this tool, you can do just that. They say time is money, and that is certainly true when you’re on the job. Imagine having a leak of some kind and needing to find it and fix it quickly. With the FOTRIC TD2e acoustic imager, it makes it easy to locate sources of sound, and many types of leaks produce ultrasonic sound that this camera can detect. As an example it can hear your fingers if you rub them together, that’s how sensitive this tool is. Let’s be real, this is a relatively expensive tool to have around. Most people buy tools to help them fix a problem, and this is no different. I personally would only buy this if you know it can pay for itself eventually. If this tool can find a leak before a wall is put in, it could potentially pay for itself the first time you use it. I would gear this tool towards auto mechanics, HVAC technicians, mechanical engineers, building maintenance, industrial predictive maintenance, compressed air service companies, airline maintenance, shipbuilding, electrical inspection, refineries, hotel engineering, research, and many others. There are hundreds of industries where this tool could be helpful. The tool itself is very well-made from what I can see. It feels great in your hand with a rubbery grip. The battery is removable, which is a nice feature. Should it ever fail, it’s easy to replace. This battery also fits the FOTRIC thermal imagers. The acoustic imager has an LED light built in for low-light situations. The various menu buttons feel good and are all pretty self-explanatory. The imager comes with a quick-start guide, AC adapter with country-specific attachments, charging cradle, USB-C cord, and a padded cardboard box. The padded cardboard box is one area that I would love to see changed. I wish they would charge $30 more and include a polypropylene padded case with a handle. If you measure the acoustic imager, you can find a pick-and-pluck case that it fits in for around $25-$30. Why couldn’t they sell this with the case already? That’s my question. It would protect the camera during shipping and be a much more professional-looking package when delivered. Anyway, that’s just my opinion. Using this acoustic imager, you should follow a workflow to identify problems. A workflow would look something similar to this: Step one: Scan your environment looking for abnormal sounds and focus on areas where you feel the problem could be. Step two: Once you identify an abnormality, identify the peak frequency and adjust the frequency range on the camera. Step three: Focus on the sound with the camera and enable Micro Detection or Noise Suppression if needed. Step four: Change your angle, distance, and position to verify that the sound is still coming from that location. Sometimes sound can bounce off surfaces, which could trick you into thinking there’s a problem at that location when there really isn’t. Step five: Compare what you found with something similar. Let’s say you found a noise at a pipe joint. Go to another pipe joint and see the difference. Or maybe you have a bearing that is making a noise. Go to another bearing and compare it to that one. If I managed a large hotel with many mechanical rooms, I would go room by room and photograph every pump, motor, electrical panel, and anything else that could possibly fail. Then you would have a baseline to use if you ever encountered a problem. You could go from room to room every month and compare your results to help identify potential problems before they develop into failures. The acoustic imager cannot see behind walls. It detects airborne acoustic energy, so anything behind a wall or underground is not a great use of this tool. The acoustic imager can take pictures of what you find by taking a screenshot showing what you’re looking at along with the acoustic energy it detects. You take a picture using the trigger, and it is stored on the microSD card in the camera. If you look at other acoustic imagers available for sale, many of them are very expensive and cost thousands of dollars. The TD2e is an acoustic imager, but the value you get for the money is very good. In closing, if you’re involved in troubleshooting and the budget allows for this tool, I certainly would consider getting one. This is not a toy. This acoustic imager stacks up quite nicely against major players in this market, with some competitors costing many times more. Other acoustic imagers may have better reporting features, which would help you create more detailed inspection reports if you need them. Over all I think the TD2e is a very capable tool for finding and troubleshooting problems by way of identifying sound, and it offers a lot of capability for its price.

An amazing device for locating and characterizing all kinds of sounds for such tasks as diagnosing faults, finding leaks, etc. Very sensitive and very accurate! I have seen similar devices from other manufacturers but the cheapest one costs more than £8K and the prices range upwards from there to well over £20K. Given the quality, advanced technology, and capabilities of the Fotric TD2e, it's an incredible value!

I bought this to track down hard to pinpoint noises and squeaks. For example, the other night we heard a cricket chirping someplace in the house. It was so hard to tell where the sound was coming from!

The next night when it started chirping again I thought I'd see if I could find the cricket with the TD2e. I found the frequency range of crickets online and used that to narrow the range on the TD2e. Within a few seconds we discovered why we couldn't find the cricket. The sound was clearly shown coming up through the floor from under the house!

Pretty amazing tool.

It’s a lightweight camera and easy to use. The photo quality is good. Overall, it fulfills the purpose of the camera. Obviously, it’s not the same as a €15,000 camera.

Been chasing an air leak in our plant for weeks. Old ultrasonic tool kept giving false positives — drove me nuts. Plugged this in, swept the room, and there it was — clear as day on the screen, from like 50 feet away. The frequency display on the right side made it obvious which sound was the leak vs background noise. Took maybe 10 minutes total. Honestly, I was skeptical at first because the price seemed too good for this kind of tech. But nope. It just works. Already ordered a second one for our other facility.

Pulled it out of the box and honestly thought they sent the wrong thing — looks and feels like a way more expensive piece of gear. The housing is sturdy, not that cheap plastic feel you get with some budget tools. Screen is crisp, controls are intuitive enough that I didn't even glance at the manual. Fired it up, pointed it around my shop, and started finding air leaks in under a minute. Lightweight too — walked around for a good hour without my arm getting tired. For what this costs vs what it does, the build quality alone is a win.
